About the estate
Garth House was originally home of the Gwynne family in the 17th Century, Marmaduke Gwynne’s daughter Sarah (1726-1822) married Charles Wesley (English leader of the methodist movement) at nearby Llanlleonfel church in 1749. It is claimed that on a stormy night he saw a robin sheltering from the elements in the eaves of the window in the blue room. This inspired him to write his famous hymn “Jesu lover of my soul”. In 1876 the estate was inherited by W. Fuller-Maitland and then acquired by the Wilson family in 1912.
